Freelancers' Films on Libya, Syria Win Press Prize

Excerpt:

French freelance photographer and filmmaker Mani won the news award for a report on the Syrian forces' shelling campaign in Homs in February. Mani gained rare access to the people and fighters in the city as they took on President Bashar al-Assad's forces. Briton Daniel Bogado won the Sony Impact Award for a film on a largely unknown war between civilians and the government in Sudan. The AP is a sponsor of the Rory Peck Trust, which produces the awards. The prize, established in 1995, is named after freelance cameraman Rory Peck, who was killed in Moscow in 1993.
